Wikipedia may disappear
If you are unfamiliar with the Wikipedia, the definition as described on their page is:
Wikipedia (IPA: /?wi?ki??pi?di.?/) is a multilingual, Web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers; with rare exceptions, its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Web site. The name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Its primary servers are in Tampa, Florida, with additional servers in Amsterdam and Seoul.
This site often links to the Wikipedia in nearly every article. It is a site which contains information on just about anything and everyone. Additionally, it has an open source, allowing web authors to incorporate a similar backend into their own site for informational purposes, which can be seen on this art fan site.
Sadly, there was a recent near begging for money
Florence Devouard, Chairwoman of the Wikimedia foundation has told an audience at the Lift07 conference that Wikipedia has the financial resources to run its servers for another 3-4 months, and that without further funding Wikipedia “might disappear”.
My guess is that one of two things will happen. We’ll start to see some ads appear on Wikipedia soon or, more likely, someone will buy it. This could be another ripe picking in the surge of the Web 2.0 market of dot coms buying other dot coms. My guess, Google will try picking this up in a heart beat.
