A person who collects and is obsessed with sneakers is referred to as a “sneakerhead“. Collectors range from casual admirers to those who buy and sell shoes like Britney Spears flashes her junk, which is often. A collector’s main goal is to get their hands on the rarest, coolest shoes on the market, ranging from Adidas and Nike to Bape and Reebok. Sneakerheads will sometimes preserve their shoes, like people who collect fine artwork, baseball cards or comic books by keeping them in clean, cool and dark places. Sometimes a collector will be adventurous bring a pair out of storage and wear them, usually when the sun is shining and there is no chance of rain.

Just like any other hobby, friendships, conversations and relationships are started among collectors. Just as with any obsession, sneakerheads will hoard their sneakers. Sneakerheads are willing to drop hundreds to thousands of dollars on one pair or a few of Nike Air Force Ones. The extent of their fascination goes to the length of camping over night waiting for the latest pair of kicks. Fights have broken out in retail stores over the release and availability of new shoes.

The sneaker phenomenon has become apart of the media as of recent. This is due to exposure it is receiving from television, magazines, radio shows, websites, ads and books. ESPN2 has a show, “It’s All About the Shoes”, which showcases collectors’ enormous closets. Fat Joe has been one of the featured celebrities, as seen in the clips below.
