I’ve been considering trying to blog full time for the last few weeks. The other blog I run has been extremely successful and the time invested in it has yielded a decent return. My interests for blogging full time are rather sim

  • No set schedule
  • No one to answer to
  • Free reign to write about whatever I’d like
  • Ability to spend more time with my dog
  • Work on my photography more
  • Spend more time with my friends
  • Control my income a little better

Obstacles that can get my way are:

  • Poor grammar. I tend to write (type) fast and don’t always use the best of grammar, although the F7 key is my friend, it too has let me down from time to time.
  • Inconsistent money, profits from websites tend to swing pretty bad sometimes
  • Payouts are usually net 30, so it would mean budgeting a little more tightly
  • More reading then I could imagine. In order to blog full time, I’d be reading 10-50 times the amount of blogs I currently read, in addition to news sites and other social networking sites in an attempt to get as much knowledge as I could.

My other main concern would be motivation. For the last year or so I have been going into work one half hour early to work on my other blog, and my job doesn’t mind much if I do so. I also spend at least half my lunch hour doing the same and occasionally will stay 10-15 minutes later in the evening to do the same. The main reason I’m doing this is so that I am not late for work and partly because my internet connection at home can be shady. What I’ve found is that I am much more productive in the half hour before work then I am for an entire day off at home, like Saturday or Sunday. I don’t know if it is the rush to get it all done before work starts, the environment, the lighting, any of it. All I know is that I am much less motivated to do this while I am at home.

If you Google for professional blogging, one could find an endless array of sites to read. The first non-ad site is one that I started to read more then a year ago and will be trying to read more, ProBlogger.net. It appears to be a great resource; however appearances don’t always mean everything.

So, if you have any ideas on how to stay motivated while doing this as a full time job, please comment. Likewise, if you are already blogging for a living, please share your thoughts, they are much appreciated.
