Growing up in the mid to late 80′s as a young boy, baseball was everything and the hero’s of the day were like gods. I also remember Pete Rose getting banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling, however I was so young I didn’t fully understand what it meant. Within a few years of that, the strike happened and other sports and hobbies started to become more interesting and over the last 15+ years now I’ve lost interest altogether in baseball.

Even after all this time, Pete Rose is still in the news on a regular basis. He was a great ball player and pretty decent manager, I don’t know why they just won’t let him in the Hall of Fame. My feeling is that he will be inducted in shortly after he dies, which is really sad.

Yesterday’s news is about his gambling again. Rose denied that he bet on sports until 2004 when he confessed to doing so in his autobiography. Now he says

I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team. I did everything in my power every night to win that game.

At this point, what does it really matter? Should he really be banned from getting his jersey retired or from the Hall of Fame because of his betting? I’m not 100% sure, he made the decision to do what he did, only he was able to control the outcome of his life.
