MTV makes Aesop Rock artist of the week
In what can only be an ironically twist of fate, an article I wrote last week about the new Aesop Rock video featuring animation by Jeremy Fish, I said I doubt you’ll see this on MTV since they never play videos. This whole past week MTV made Aesop Rock artist of the week, showing short clips of his live acts and a public TV show he did with MTVs camera gear between episodes of The Hills and other popular MTV shows.
The artist of the week page has a short write-up on why they chose Aesop, it hurt my head to read it, clearly someone was trying to prove their English savvy while composing this. No matter how you look at it, this could be the breaking point to get Aesop into more of the mainstream. What’s unique is that none of the buzz around him has to do with the fact that he’s white, he is standing on the merit of his own skills. While other white rappers have been doing well, like Paul Wall have done very well based on skills, most white rappers get attention simply because they are white. When I was first introduced to Aesop’s music, it was through an MP3, I had no idea he was white, I could honestly care less, he has a sick flow and Blockhead makes some seriously crazy beats.
The only benefit to going to the MTV site linked earlier in the article is to see the video embedded, which includes a portion of the public access type skit Aesop did with Blockhead and outcomes the quote,
I’m not a player I just blog a lot
Go cop the new Aesop Rock album, None Shall Pass, you won’t be disappointed.
