This morning while driving to work I had a rather unusual encounter with the state police.  Just after merging onto the major highway for my commute I noticed the state trooper about a half-mile behind me.  Not a big deal, I was not speeding [yet], my seat belt was on, my inspection and registration information was current and my insurance info was in the glove box.  Nonetheless, I still don’t like driving around cops.

After getting to the speed limit of 55mph, the troopers came up on my left side and passed me, to my surprise another car came flying up behind them and while not tailgating, stayed pretty close.  Then more traffic started to follow in line.

By my guess, they were doing close to 70.  While speeding is both dangerous and wastes gas, I usually do 65 on my commute to work, 10 miles per hour over the limit; this is what the flow of traffic dictates.  Like a salmon going to spawn, this was the effect this morning as well, only the leader was a state trooper.

Being in the right lane, I was going a bit slower and the next exit has a short merge lane on the right, so I switched to the left lane and sped up a bit, the trooper and a handful of cars still speeding away in front of me.  At 65 I decided I wasn’t going to go much faster, even though there was about a mile difference now between the trooper and I, it just didn’t feel right.

Had I been 2 minutes earlier onto the highway, that same speeding cop would have nailed me for speeding when he caught up to me.  Because of my timing, I just watched as he led the pack, speeding 10-15mph over the speed limit with a slew of cars behind him.
