[...] As UpTake suggests, sing loudly if you’re driving alone or shout for a moment or two. You can also make the drive a more interesting part of your travels and keep your mind occupied by taking Randomn3ss’ advice and looking for photo opportunities to drive 1,000 miles or more in a day.
I just completed an 600 mile trip by myself for the first time, it was great. I completely agree with number 25, best part of the drive.

These are great tips! I make playlists on my iPod so that I can have different types of music to fit the atmosphere I need to create: soothing music to calm me during bad weather, raucous music when my energy is flagging, and fun music to put me in a good mood. I keep toll change in the well created by my door handle, and when I fear getting lost, I use my cell phone's GPS (connect through my bluetooth earpiece so I can hear it clearly).

I do all my text messaging, phone calls and multimedia messages during my breaks rather than while I'm driving. Contacting people is a good tip, by the way: make sure the people expecting you are up to date on your progress in case something happens. If no one is expecting you at your destination, then alert a friend somewhere about your trip so that you have a contact person to check on you.

Great writing style: mentally immersible and practical. After driving from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania 10-12x/year over a 7 year (itch) period, I hereby attest to the pain of traveling. If you're a card carrying member of the Caffeine Club, commit to drinking plenty of water. Switch to (real) chai: caffeine from the black tea along w/ cinnamon, cardamom and ginger is quite invigorating! Digression: Experience is not always the best teacher. Ever flip in a car because the driver switched tapes (ah, the 8o's)? Slayer never sounded the same after that...

Thanks for the words, guys! I hope some others who have done long hauls - truckers especially - will tell their tales, too. My back-to-back 1000-mile-days were from Boston to Boulder, CO. Kansas was this amazing sea of undulating green field. Aaahh... I get to do the 1000 mile thing again in August. Perhaps another article will come from that. Happy driving...

This is some great advice. I once drove from Laramie, Wyoming to San Jose, California (1,158 miles, 17 hours) straight through. By the end, I wanted to die. Drinking three Red Bulls was probably not the best idea too.

Great article!! I totally understand... driving 800 miles to Bonnaroo by myself SUCKED, but I did follow a lot of these rules to make the trip better! Cat napping really helps too - it's amazing what 20-30 minutes of sleep will do for your concentration.

Glad you're back safe :)
