Gumball 3000 canceled after two die; 70 drivers cited for speeding
The annual Gumball 3000 rally event through Europe was canceled after two drivers died in accidents and over 70 drivers were citied for speeding, including rapper Xzibit who lost his license doing more then 100mph in a 60mph stretch of road through the Netherlands. The event has been taking place officially since 1999 and covers 3000 miles across Europe with several checkpoints along the way. All of this happens on public roads and while speeding isn’t exactly encouraged, it is a timed event and there are bragging rights.
This year, most of the major sponsors pulled out after Xzibit and several others were faced with hefty fines and lots of publicity. Traditionally, the event attracts the wealthier people from around the globe who bring some of the most exotic cars out for the event.
According to reports, this is the first time there have been deaths associated with the rally race and it is still uncertain if it will happen again next year.
