Google custom homepage now has themes
I’ve been a fan of the Google custom homepage since the day it was released. It is the only RSS reader I use and how I keep track of all the blogs, sites and forums I’m on quickly. A few weeks back Google updated the custom homepage to show parts of articles listed, I’m still trying to get used to it and am not totally sold on the concept. Today they have announced another update, themes.
Google says that the “theme will dynamically change to match your time of day, including local sunrise and sunset times”, so you have to enter your location. If you look in the XML, you’ll notice a lot of references to the weather, so it’s likely that the theme will change depending on weather, as well.

Installing the theme only takes a few seconds to install and asks for your location so it can update itself, very cool. since this is based on CSS, Google may allow anyone to create themes to host locally on your computer for faster loading. I’ve only had it installed for a few hours, I’m excited to see what happens around 7pm when the sunsets and how the page will update.
The Google custom homepage is also a great way to subscribe to Randomn3ss.com via RSS feed.

Update: 3pm and my theme has changed to rain and the people at the bus stop have their umbrellas out, however it is sunny outside in real life. Perhaps the kinks in their script aren’t fully worked out yet.

Update: 10pm and the sun is still out, as seen in the first photo here. Hopefully they will get the kinks worked out soon.
