Gmail seems to be working again
After more than thirty minutes of seeing errors while trying to send a message in Gmail, whatever was ailing the server seems to have been fixed. Being that Gmail is still beta, it makes me reflect on an earlier article, what if Gmail shuts down. I rely on Gmail probably more than I should, but for some reason I really trust Google. In the grand scheme of things, these 30 minutes of downtime is probably less than one tenth of one percent of total downtime since the service was launched. I’m just happy it is back.

Yeah, good thing it’s back too. I was starting to get a little shaky.

I love my Gmail, to be sure, but I have a question for ya… Google Docs: what do they do with the information that everyone is putting on there? People have been warning me not to put any kind of confidential info there. Should that warning also apply then to Gmail itself?

Brad, really valid question. I don’t use it for anything personal; I rarely use it to be honest. The calendar is nice when I need to be reminded of a date for something, it sends me a happy little email, other than that, I’ve only poked at the rest of Docs to see what they do.
My best guess is that Google would, in their best interest, keep everything as private as possible. Any breech in security or worse, consumer trust could lead to the demise of the proverbial 800-pound gorilla.

I use the spreadsheets and docs, cause I don’t want to pay Microsoft for their stuff and its super convenient with the anywhere access.
Great point, thanks!

One option could be a USB thumb drive with a portable app of OpenOffice.org on it, and you could use that anywhere, and / or upload those files to Gmail for storage purposes.
Not as pretty, but that would work
