30+ ways to save a few bucks
Going a step further then the coupon articles I’ve written, Frugal For Life has 30+ tips on how to save a dollar or more. They range from common sense things to minor life changes, but if you are trying to save some loot, give them a chance. Some of the tips are
- Cut out buying one soda or coffee a day – make or bring your own
- Downgrade/Cancel cell phone or landline service
- Use coupons and consider them money – every coupon used (or doubled) means you put that amount away
The article has a lot of really weird advice too, some of which I don’t agree with, at all.
Trade down in car or home and bank the difference you’ve made. The car kind of makes sense, they depreciate in value as soon as you buy them and there are now more fuel efficient options out there. If however you buy a car that is too old, you could find yourself with costly repairs. The house on the other hand, I don’t totally agree with. If you are single, you probably don’t need a 5,000 square foot house with 5 bedrooms and 6 baths, it will most defiantly cost an arm and leg in electric alone, but it will appreciate in value over time, so long as you keep up with the maintance. I’m still a strong beliver that you almost can’t go wrong buying real estate. No matter what you pay today, it will seem cheap 10 years from now.
Figure out what you pay for gas each month, drive one day less a week and at the end of the month bank the difference. This just isn’t possible for a lot of people. I will think about where I have to go and take the most sensible route, but simply not driving for one day a week to try to save some cash isn’t a viable option for me.
Buy generic and save the difference. No. I’ll buy less of what I like but I am buying what I like. Some things just are not the same generic, certain foods, certain products, certain clothing. I’m not saying that I’ll spend $125 for the newest designer t-shirt, but I will buy the name brand granola I like because it just tastes better. To be frugal, I don’t buy it all the time.
Write checks for over the amount instead of paying bank fees. I don’t know if that is just worded wrong or maybe I’m missing it. It should be, Pay more than the minimum on all your bills. That I agree with.
Overall it is a very well put together article, worth a read for sure.
